Malika Favre – Hide and Seek
My spring 2013 capsule collection for Volcom is now in production. I learnt during the process that in collaborations of this scale editing the collection down from its original wider scaled plan, is a very important and critical part of the process.
I realized that some things that work in print don’t always work for textile design and vice versa.
Unfortunately we couldn’t turn every single one of my illustrations into a striking garnment so when Volcom asked me if I wanted to have a summer solo exhibition in Berlin, I saw an opportunity to rework those unused sketches and turn them into a coherent exhibition. Plus I love Berlin. Who doesn’t…?
I created a series of prints based on some of the initial sketches and asked my dear George at Barnhaus to screeprint them. I just saw the final prints yesterday and they look stunning.

The exhibition opens on the 5th of July at the Stackstone gallery in Berlin and tells the story of a woman who’s cheeky and sophisticated, hiding inside intricate architectural patterns and playing tricks with our mind. There will be some very limited editions screenprints plus a piece of moving image to complete the show.
In a nutshell : A bit of Pop Art mixed with a lot of OpArt.
I will only reveal 2 of the prints today but that should give you a taste for it ; )

After months of preparation and hard work, all that’s left for me to do now is to pick an outfit for the opening night. Looking for something black and white that makes your eyes go funny…
