Emily Hoy /// Girls Art Director @ Volcom

Life?
I live in Long Beach in the lovely Belmont area!
I grew up on a humble little farm in eastern Ohio.
With the forest, streams, animals, my little ponies (real and toy)
and my sister by my side, my childhood was a dream come true.

How long have you been at Volcom?
I have been at Volcom for 8 years now!! YEAHH!!It’s truly my dream job. I feel very lucky.

What are your inspirations in the art world right now?
My inspirations in the art world now are seeing how technology has changed and influenced design. Yet I see in art that we are getting back to our roots and being grounded in respects to our planet. The computer is simply another medium like a paint brush. I love seeing pixels or digital aesthetics in a design, it looks like nothing from the past! History repeats itself in fashion so much. The computer vibe makes us see things we have never seen before!

“I think our generation is getting more open minded to spirituality and appreciating and respecting nature as our home. Seeing more art with native, earthy, spacey, organic influences and undertones is really inspiring. Mixing that with digital future is the ultimate juxtaposition.”

Top 10 Creative ‘Rules’ you love to break or live to follow?
If I’m not breaking the rules then I’m not pushing the envelopeI love working for Volcom, it’s almost a requirement to break the rules!
Editing is also a big rule I follow somewhat. Sometimes it’s not what I put into a design but what I take out.
I love to do the opposite of what I see.
Look at a design in progress, walk away then come back with fresh eyes.
Open my mind.
Have pure freakin’ fun, be myself, trust my eye.
Sorry there’s not 10 answers but I’m breaking the rules!
